Skin Tag Removal

Skin Growth Removal

A skin tag is a common type of soft-tissue skin growth that often forms on the face, under the armpits, or under the breasts. Nearly everyone will develop at least one skin tag during his or her lifetime, and some people have more than 100. Although they are harmless, many are uncomfortable with the appearance of skin tags, especially those in plain sight on the eyelids or neck. Dr. Paine can perform a skin tag removal procedure to safely eliminate your skin growths and achieve your desired appearance.

What Is a Skin Tag?

A skin tag, or acrochordon, is a small, benign growth of soft skin tissue. Skin tags are often confused with a wart or mole, but appear more balloon-like and tend to hang from the skin. They are often the same color as your skin, but may appear slightly darker. Both men and women can develop skin tags, and they have been linked to obesity and older age. Some skin tags may fall off on their own, but most remain on the skin unless removed.

Skin tags are most commonly found on the:

  • Neck
  • Armpits
  • Eyelids
  • Groin
  • Buttock
  • Beneath the breasts

Dr. A. James Paine, Jr. can be safely remove skin tags with professional treatment.

How Are Skin Tags Removed?

Dr. Paine will describe your skin tag removal procedure in detail during your consultation. Most skin tags can be removed with little pain or discomfort to the patient and require no anesthesia. Removing a skin tag will not cause others to grow in its place.

Dr. Paine will perform the skin tag removal using one of the following methods:

  • Freezing
  • Tying the tag off at the base using thread or sutures
  • Cutting off the tag at the base

The ideal treatment for you will be based on the size and location of your skin tag. Following your treatment, you will be able to get back to your normal routine with little to no downtime. You may experience some minor discomfort such as numbness, but this should fade within a day.

Skin Biopsy

Skin Cancer Diagnosis

Early diagnosis can dramatically increase your chances of quickly overcoming problems with skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, with roughly 3.5 million new cases diagnosed each year. If you notice any abnormalities on your skin, it is important to have it professionally checked as soon as possible. Dr. Paine can perform a skin biopsy to thoroughly analyze a sample of your skin tissue and determine whether further treatment is necessary.

Should You Consider a Skin Biopsy?

Skin biopsies are most commonly performed to diagnose skin cancer, but Dr. Paine may also conduct the procedure for other conditions including psoriasis or a bacterial/fungal infection. If you notice any changes in the appearance of your skin, undergoing a skin biopsy will help determine what is causing the problem and can lead to early and effective treatment.

Common symptoms of skin cancer include changes in the color, shape, size or appearance of a mole or an area of skin—also known as a skin lesion. If you notice any of these signs, you should contact a specialist and schedule a skin biopsy to determine whether or not skin cancer treatment is required.

A skin biopsy can be performed for anyone experiencing a suspicious skin lesion. Dr. Paine will explain your procedure in detail during your consultation. The type of biopsy he will perform will be based on your unique condition, the size of the skin lesion, and where it is located.

The Skin Biopsy Procedure

There are three different types of methods Dr. Paine may perform to acquire the skin sample:

With a shave biopsy, Dr. Paine will gently shave off the growth using the edge of a scalpel. This type of skin biopsy uses only local anesthesia and requires no stitches.

A punch biopsy removes a circular piece of skin using a sharp, hole punch-like tool that is placed over the suspicious lesion. Forceps are then used to lift the sample and prepare it for testing. Local anesthesia is used, but stitches may be necessary once the sample is removed.

Excision biopsies are necessary for larger lesions. Dr. Paine will remove the entire suspicious area of skin using a scalpel, and will then close the wound using stitches. Local anesthesia is used for this method of biopsy as well. In some cases, a skin graft may be needed to cover the area from where the lesion was removed.

Once Dr. Paine has obtained the skin sample, it is placed into a solution and examined under a microscope for analysis. Dr. Paine will then go over the results of your biopsy with you and will discuss further treatment, if necessary.

CO2 Laser Skin Treatment

A carbon dioxide (CO2) laser for skin resurfacing treatment precisely removes outer layers of damaged skin to reveal the underlying skin which is softer, smoother, and younger looking. It is also a very effective treatment for acne scarring.

This is an ablative laser skin procedure with great results, but it also has the most downtime. Downtime varies from patient to patient, but typically for the first few days your skin will need to be protected, then will gradually heal over the next week. Most patients look like they have had a bad sunburn around day seven. The redness will gradually fade over the next several weeks. Sun protection is an absolute must with this procedure.

CO2 fractionated resurfacing

The Matrix Fractional CO² laser optimizes traditional CO² treatments by introducing MicroAblative Columns (MACs) into the tissue while preserving untreated skin in-between spots. This promotes rapid re-epithelialization and long-term collagen remodeling while offering the patient comfort level and convenience that approaches non-ablative laser resurfacing.

Acne Treatment

Dusa BlueU® Light Acne Treatment

Dusa Blu-U® Light Photodynamic Therapy Illuminator is FDA approved to treat moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris. The BLU-U® offers effective, non-invasive and pain-free treatment for moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris. Narrow band blue light causes a photodynamic effect within the pilosebaceous gland that kills P. acnes, the bacteria primarily responsible for acne vulgaris. When used in a series of brief (approximately 17 minutes) exposure sessions, it provides a simple, non-invasive treatment regimen. BLU-U® treatments can be a primary treatment, an alternative to pharmaceuticals and topicals, or an adjunct to skin care programs.

Dusa Blue-U® Light can also be used in the treatment of Actinic Keratosis (AK).  It can be used to activate Levulan PDT, a 2-part treatment, which is unique because it uses a light activated drug therapy to destroy AKs.  Levulan Kerastick Topical solution is applied to the AK.  The solution is then absorbed by the AK cells where it is converted to a chemical that makes the cells extremely sensitive to light.  When the AK cells are exposed to the BLU-U® Light Illuminator, a reaction occurs which destroys the AK cells.  The treatment takes approximately 60-90 minutes.

Vascular & Pigment Treatments

Aesthera IPL PPX
This is an ideal treatment for all skin types and is a popular treatment for both men and women and for young and older skin types.  As well as rejuvenating your skin leaving a healthy and youthful looking appearance, this IPL also treats: blotchy and uneven skin pigmentation, active acne, redness of the skin, acne rosacea, brown spots, freckles, sun damage, facial tread veins and some skin rejuvenation.  This is the first modality in our photo-facial.  We can also use infusion with this piece of equipment.

Vera-Lite 532
The Iridex 532™ is a piece of equipment that can be used to treat vascular and pigmented skin lesions through use of a laser. The laser generates a beam of intense concentrated light, which targets a certain area to remove unwanted lesions. This is also one of the steps we use during IPL.

Skin Rejuvenation

Fractionated Resurfacing

skin rejuvenationThe Icon laser is utilized to provide non-ablative skin resurfacing with high efficacy and no downtime.  The laser handpiece delivers light in an array of high precision microbeams.  These microbeams create narrow, deep columns of tissue coagulation that penetrate well below the epidermis and into the dermis, while sparing the tissue surrounding the columns from damage.  The treatments are scheduled in a series of five separate visits, approximately 21 days apart.  In between the treatment sessions, collagen formation will occur resulting in tighter, more youthful skin.  Your final results will be seen approximately six months after your final treatment.

Factionated Laser helps treat wrinkles, superficial scarring caused by acne or other sources, and pigmentation. This option has little to no downtime and our technician will be able to assess your concerns and recommend a certain number of treatments that will help you achieve your goal.

Thermi

Thermi: The Thermi family has 3 different routes for skin rejuvenation.
• ThermiTight is a minimally invasive procedure where a probe is inserted under the skin to gently heat specific tissues resulting in a tightening of the skin. Patients can resume normal activity the next day.
• ThermiSmooth in a non-invasive procedure that stimulates collagen using a radio frequency technique that can be performed around the eyes, mouth, cheeks, and neck. There is no downtime to this and usually a series of 3-6 treatments are recommended.
• ThermiVa is here to help you take back control of your life through feminine rejuvenation. As you age your body goes through changes that might affect multiple parts of your life. ThermiVa uses radiofrequency to rejuvenate collagen without any discomfort or downtime. This service gives women multiple benefits in their everyday and sexual lives.
